Pope On Immigration & National Teach Ag Day

Pope On Immigration & National Teach Ag Day. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

Pope Francis spoke to a packed house yesterday as he addressed Congress in a day filled with activities at the nations Capital. In a strong message, the Pope implored Congress to accept immigrants as their own. Washington Congressman Dan Newhouse was in attendance and hopes the message will catch fire.

NEWHOUSE: That was probably one of the larger applause lines I think when he started talking about America being a land of immigrants and that most all of us are decedents of immigrants if not immigrants ourselves and so I think that that was important for him to remind people ofd that fact and so I would hope that that would be carried over into our conversations and the decision making process that we have.

Yesterday was also National Teach Ag Day which is an initiative to bring attention to the career of agricultural education, get students thinking about a possible career in agricultural education, and support current agriculture teachers in their careers. Agricultural education teaches students about agriculture, food and natural resources. Through these subjects, agricultural educators teach students a wide variety of skills, including science, math, communications, leadership, management and technology. There are approximately 12,000 agricultural educators in the U.S., but demand still outstrips supply.
