Oregon Horse Killed ODFW claims it was Elk

Last week near Imnaha, Oregon Lefty, a six-year old horse, was found laying dead in his pasture with a torn open flank. He was found by a neighbor of Eric Porter’s whose ranch the horse on — Doug and he shares what he found at the scene.

Doug: “So I went up there to take a look and there is one horse dead and the Appaloosa is standing over it just looking at — scared plumb to death. I walked on up the hill there a ways. It looks like a blood bath. Then it looks like it was run towards the fence, and it hit the fence and then when it did it ran straight down probably — I don’t know — another 75 yards almost in front of the wire gate and that is where it met its demise.”

He continues with the wounds he saw on the horse.

Doug: “It’s got a heck of a puncture wound right in the face and then one in the flank and then there was another one up around the neck area. There is probably about 20 feet of guts laying there in the field where whoever grabbed it in the stomach got some guts. Then stung it down through there as they were chasing it or whatever they were doing.”

I spoke with several people who saw the horse dead in the field, all — but the representative from agency making the determination — said it was wolves that attacked and killed poor Lefty. he Oregon Dept Fish and Wildlife determined  Elk killed Lefty.
