Bee Day & Weather Patterns to Watch

Bee Day & Weather Patterns to Watch. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

We've all heard of the 1950's movie, "The Blob." Well a blob off the Pacific Northwest coast may help end the drought in the west. The blob in this case is a swirling mass of ocean water that has not cooled off as in the past and is now warmer that it's ever been. In fact there are three such blobs in the Pacific Ocean and those combined with the El Nino weather pattern could just help bring some relief to the drought which is now in its fourth year across the west. Meteorologists are not in agreement as to how the two patterns may develop but it really bears watching and of course crossing your fingers.

Oregon's Governor Kate Brown has declared tomorrow, August 15th as Oregon Native Bees Conservation Awareness Day. The proclamation was requested by Beyond Toxics, a Eugene-based environmental health nonprofit. Oregon Department of Agriculture's Bruce Pokarney says ODA supports the governor's proclamation.

POKARNEY: Well certainly the Oregon Department of Agriculture along with most Oregonians recognize the value and importance of pollinators both to the ag industry and just in general, our quality of life that we have. Any recognition by the public of roles they can play, steps they can take to help protect pollinators is a good thing. We hope people will take a moment during this time designated and proclaimed as a special day o recognize our native pollinators and see what actions they can take individually to help protect that very important component of our life.

That's today's Northwest Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network of the West.
