Idaho Farm Bureau reporter, Steve Ritter and I recently met with drone owner and expert Robert Blair to discuss issues that are going to change the way that farmers conduct their businesses. "As you look into the future and the application of drones, the FAA as a whole lot of stuff to work out yet, how do you feel? Do we still have major obstacles? Yes, we still have obstacles in terms of regulations. The FAA has put out their proposed rules for small drone use and we have come a long way since 2008 in terms of my rule making process in trying to get regulations to fly. So, is there work to be done, yes. Are we hopeful, you bet. Are we going to get there, yes we will. One of the unique features about the system that we are using is one of their software capabilities that allows us to create a 3-D rendition of the areas that we are flying without LIDAR. It's a light payload, it's a 1 1/2 pound frame so it is very light and that is with camera and battery. Its capabilities are just superior. Just in the few flights that we have been able to do this year we have had some great information from having systems and software that can do the job to what I was trying to do using off the shelf technology on the cheap. It has been interesting and fun and I have learned a lot.
