Crystal Wilson is a Registered Dietician working for the United Dairymen of Idaho and we recently chatted about getting the most mileage from your food choices – with a focus on protein. “Protein is an essential nutrient that our body uses throughout the day. It helps with curbing our hunger, weight management and preserving lean body muscle. Diets that are higher in protein can help power your path to health and wellness. When you look at us as Americans, we tend to consume more protein at lunch and dinner and less protein and other parts of the day such as at breakfast and snack time. So there has really been a focus on protein and the big picture is that it is easy to get enough protein in our diet but what is more difficult is to actually distribute it more equally throughout the day. So I assume you are not a fan of not eating breakfast. I am not an advocate of no breakfast. Have you ever heard the expression, eat breakfast like a king, eat lunch like a prince and eat dinner like a pauper? no I haven’t but that makes sense. That is true for breakfast and for protein but guess what? We do the exact opposite. Right now, experts are suggesting that we try and consume 20 to 30 g of protein at each meal or snack. Looking at dairy products, they are naturally high in high quality, complete protein source you look at featuring them as part of each of your meals, that helps you get to the 20 to 30 g.
