I talked with Wyatt Prescott of the Idaho Cattlemen's Association about surreptitious videos. “I wonder about the psychological state of a person who is actually shooting that video and not intervening. That is exactly right. I can think of to particular cases and I know one that was settled out of court. This was with Mercy for Animals. There was an operation that was euthanizing calves in a non-humane fashion and they filmed it and sent that film to all of the traders on the Chicago Board of the Mercantile Exchange. Later, it was found out, that they got access to the unedited version of that incident where they actually caught on film an employee of that advocacy group doing the inhumane youth innovation practice and showing the immigrant worker how to do it and then handing it to them and then filming them do it. In other incidences they were able to find out that by speeding up footage to where someone might be gently tapping an animal and they speed it up seamlessly enough you can do a lot of things to video footage. That is ultimately the problem. They are utilizing bits and pieces without the whole picture, maybe even altering them, and they are utilizing it to prosecute the industry as a whole in the court of public opinion. We do not argue one bit that those individuals having bad practices should be prosecuted and should be thrown in jail. That is why we supported a felony provision and ran a felony provision in the state of Idaho two years ago.
