Train Delays & Another Storm for the East

Train Delays & Another Storm for the East

Train Delays & Another Storm for the East plus Food Forethought. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

Neither rain, nor sleet...oh, well. The weather is wreaking havoc on rail service according to Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway officials. Delays have also been blamed on increased crude oil and freight shipments. North Dakota Senator John Hoeven brought railroad and farm officials together Tuesday to address agriculture shipping delays. Not only have there been delays for ag products but for passenger service as well.

And as temperatures began to moderate a bit here in the Northwest the eastern seaboard is bracing for yet another winter blast. Meteorologist Brad Rippey talks about what easterners should expect.

RIPPEY: Significant snow accumulations all the way from the southern Appalachians into New England and on the northern fringe of that precipitation shield, potentially damaging ice accumulations from the lower Mississippi Valley, the Mississippi Delta area eastward into the Piedmont region of the southern mid-Atlantic so just about everybody from Louisiana eastward to Georgia and the Carolinas northward through New England will be affected by this storm; snow, sleet, freezing rain. Rain confined primarily to the deep south in areas along the immediate Atlantic coast.

Now with today's Food Forethought, here's Lacy Gray.

Between now and April 6 farmers can nominate their local public school districts to compete for a grant of either $10,000 or $25,000 as part of the America's Farmers Grow Rural Education program. Sponsored by the Monsanto Fund the program is in its third year, and is investing over $2.3 million this year to strengthen math and science education in rural communities. Administrators from nominated school districts can then submit grant applications for either amount through April 21. Launched in 2012 the America's Farmers Grow Rural Education program has awarded more than $5 million in grant money and helped more than 400 school districts nationwide; improving science and math education across 39 states. So don't miss out on the chance to grow rural education where you live. Go to americasfarmers.com to nominate your local public school district and get helpful information on how you can spread the word about America's Farmers Grow Rural Education efforts in your community.

Thanks Lacy. That's today's Northwest Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
