Ag Hall Of Fame

I’m Lacy Gray with Washington Ag Today.

Formed in 2000, the Mid-Columbia Agriculture Hall of Fame recognizes and honors distinguished individuals within the agriculture community who have made significant contributions to the ag industry and their local agriculture regions and surrounding areas. The 2014 Ag Hall of Fame gala will be held January 23 at the Pasco Red Lion. Washington State Department of Agriculture Director, Bud Hover, will be in attendance as the guest speaker.

HOVER: Agriculture in the state of Washington is such a powerful industry, but many times it gets overshadowed, particularly on the west side, by the other huge industries that we have, and a lot of times people tend to forget what a powerful industry agriculture is. It’s 13 percent of our economy, $49 billion, 166 thousand jobs. So being able to tell that story from an individual’s prospective - this agricultural hall of fame - I think it’s important, it’s important to get that message of the important things that individuals in agriculture do to that urban and metropolitan audience. It’s critical that those folks that have become more and more removed from agriculture understand what it takes. And these people in agriculture are part of a community and they provide far more than just the economic factors. They’re pillars in their community. They contribute in so many ways.

2014 inductees into the Ag Hall of Fame will be Dorothy Schoeppach who will be honored with the Visionary Award, Willetta and Robert Burns will receive the Pioneer award, Lyle Holt the Ag Advisor award, and Larry Oberding will be recognized with the Young Agri-Business award.

That’s Washington Ag Today.
