I’m Lacy Gray with Washington Ag Today.

Registration opens at 1:00 pm this Wednesday for Washington, Oregon, and Idaho wheat producers attending the annual Tri-State Grain Growers Convention at the Davenport Hotel in Spokane. The event runs through noon Saturday and will focus on production.GMO crops and the discovery of GM wheat in an Oregon field earlier this year will be reviewed during a biotechnology panel discussion Thursday morning. Other breakout sessions will cover micro nutrient management, federal crop insurance, conservation partnerships, and estate tax laws, as well as a panel on “Preserving Family Farms” , conducted by Dave Specht of Advising Generations in Connell.

SPECHT: You know in the complex economy that we live in we can’t just be nonchalant about how we do our business - there needs to be some structure and some roadmap that really I guess colors the decisions that we make in our day to day operations. Embracing change is sometimes what families have to do to keep the farm competitive. All these producers are very capable and have most of the answers it’s just organizing them and then focusing on what they need to do to get to those ends and those goals.

Keynote speakers for the convention this year will include meteorologist and climate expert Art Douglas, Top Third Ag Marketing managing partner Mark Gold, and the Hefty Brothers, hosts of AgPhD on RFD-TV, who will be broadcasting their presentation live from the convention on Friday.
