Yesterday, I told you about a Boise-based beekeeper named Marten Vonk who was using a social network, kind of Facebook-ish tool called “Nextdoor” as a means of reaching out to the neighborhood and, among other things, letting people know that he had fresh honey for sale. As I said yesterday, I tried to get in touch with him and couldn’t find them anywhere so I called old friend and beekeeper Bill Ahaus to get his thoughts on this concept. “I actually was kind of surprised that they have something like that going, something that can connect in a small geographical area and where we live, little town with 800 some odd people, I had heard about something similar, I don’t know if it is the same thing, but there was a need for people to water flowers for some little town and somebody put out a little request like could somebody help me keep all the flowers watered at City Hall and lots of people showed up. I don’t know if he is using this “Nextdoor” just to sell honey or just to connect with people or not but I think it’s cool. I liked the way they described it. It was kind of like a harkening back to the old days when you would talk over the backyard fence, did you see such and such a movie, do you know any good babysitters, just casual neighborliness. I told my wife that this would be a good way to get to know people if you had some purpose or activity like we have honey for sale.”
