Fruit School

Fruit School. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

Honeycrisp apples have been getting some education time recently with the WSU Fruit School. The next school is coming up on December 5th in Wenatchee. Stephanie Chance, communications director for the Washington State Horticultural Association has the details.

CHANCE: There hadn’t been a school in the past like this and so WSU Extension and us teamed up with the Tree Fruit Research Commission and we put together a school that offered information on this Honeycrisp. It started off with orchard tours and there is a third event that is going to be held December 5th.

The event is scheduled right after the Annual Hort Convention.

CHANCE: It’s going to start off giving summaries of these two orchard tours and then it’s going to go into the economics of the Honeycrisp. They’re going to answer all the what-if’s, orchard establishment, spacing and growing of trees, the crop load, harvest strategies. They have it packed with bringing in speakers from all over.

If you signed up in the beginning you can attend this meeting as part of your initial registration but Chance says they are still signing folks up.

CHANCE: You can sign up for just event three for $80 and you can do that on our website or by calling us. Visit us on our website at wahort.org. If you click on events at the top of our page and you can sign up there or we’d be happy to help you over the phone.

If you are attending the 2013 Hort Convention you can also sign up at the registration desk as you sign up for the convention. For more details, contact the Hort office.
