Farm Bill is Ticking Time Bomb

Things continue to look bleak for getting a Farm Bill voted and signed into law by September 30th. With the five-week August recess looming, moving to conference very soon and allowing Members time to work out an agreement during August is critical to the Farm Bill’s success.
Senate Ag Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow was very candid in her dismay and disappointment in the House Republican leadership’s hardline political stance of proposing a $40 billion cut to the nutrition title of the farm bill. With only nine legislative working days scheduled for the House in the month of September, Chairwoman Stabenow says.
Stabenow: “I think this is a ticking time bomb here waiting to go off. It makes no sense. We ought to care for the 16 million people work in Rural America, in agriculture and the food industry. Rural America is very important. The biggest job bill that we will pass this year or next is the Farm Bill. It makes no sense to continue to see the political gamesmanship that blocks us from getting this done.”
Chairwoman Stabenow says she doesn’t think that another extension is likely as there are those in both the U.S. Senate and House that will fight an extension that includes direct payments.
