Fruit School Sign Ups. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

The 2013 WSU Fruit School is coming up and registrations are open. This year the topic is The Honeycrisp Experience: Production, Harvest and Storage. Stephanie Chance Washington State Horticulture Association.

CHANCE: Our primary focus is education, you know putting on the Hort Convention every year. And so Washington State University Extension and the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission asked us to partner up with them, we jumped at the chance because this is what we want to do to offer more educational opportunities for our members.

There are three events with three different locations.

CHANCE: We just figured we wanted to better cater to the grower so it’s not so far for everybody to drive. They can choose which orchard they want to go to. And we have orchard descriptions. Each orchard is in different strain or different leaf if it’s the second or third leaf.

The first class is scheduled for tomorrow, Wed and Thursday. Check online for locations.

CHANCE: They’re going to talk about site selection, plant materials, training systems, irrigation, light management, crop load. I mean they’re going to try to cover everything in the early part of the tree and then in event 2 the pre-harvest orchard tour they’re going to come back to those three same orchards and see the progress from June to September.

The third class will be held as part of the annual Hort Convention this year in Wenatchee. Contact the Hort Association for more details and to sign up or go to wahort.org.
