Marketing Basics

Marketing can be a source of frustration and confusion for many farmers. That’s where the “Understanding the Marketing Basics” workshop offered by AMMO, the Agricultural Marketing & Management Organization, can help. January 21 - 24 Randy Olstad, with Columbia Grain, and Randy Fortenbery, Professor and Small Grains Endowed Chair with WSU, will be conducting workshop sessions designed to help farmers make good marketing decisions.

FORTENBERY: What we’ll be doing is talking about some of the fundamental factors that affect agricultural markets in general - specifically how that impacts wheat in the Pacific Northwest, and how producers might want to consider some of those sort of macro type issues as they think about their marketing strategies going forward.

Fortenbery mentions some of the topics to be covered.

FORTENBERY: We’ll be looking at how things like international events, global economic conditions, exchange rates affect local prices and what the opportunities are to try and protect yourself from those price changes. We’ll also look a little bit at the outlook - looking forward for this year and next year. What does a supply and demand balance sheet look like, and what might that imply for price.

Fortenbery reflects on what attendees can hope to gather from the workshop.

FORTENBERY: Well, hopefully they’ll have a better understanding of how their local markets fit into the global economy, and how their markets are affected by changes in either macro or micro events that aren’t necessarily happening in their community, but might be happening at the national level or the world level.
