11-6 SS Ethics
A question of ethics that I would like to pose. As the technology surrounding hunting increases dramatically, I got to thinking the other day about the old days versus now. I hunted my 1st Whitetail when I was 16 using a Winchester 30-30 with no scope. You spotted and stalked, had to get close to the deer, and then looked down the barrel and aimed. Contrast that scenario with a hypothetical situation that is available today. You set up a trail cam that can video an animal even at night and you can pretty much program into your mind the animals pattern. So now that you have electronically stalked, you can go out with your rifle, set it on a tripod, and dial in your optics with computer precision. Here is a technical advisor for a company that sells high precision optics: “They are laser range finding laser scopes. It is very simple. You program it specific to your cartridge, you are going to turn it on, you are going to push a button, it is going to range something for you in the field, calculate your holdover, show you a little dot where it is going to go and that is where it is going to put it. Would it be fair to say it is kind of like a computer? Yes. It has a bunch of pre-programmed information for cartridges so depending on which one you get it will program in a drop number and that drop number is very specific to your cartridge. Once that is programmed in, it knows exactly what your cartridge is going to do and again it does everything for you.
