Just when I thought we had finally laid them to rest, acrylamides reared their ugly head in an online press release. But I will belt your best belt buckle, this story won't be picked up by the nightly news because the latest on the acrylamide saga happens to be good news. Groups like the World Health Organization have tried diligently to convince all of us that acrylamides, that nasty substance discovered by Swedish scientists a couple of years ago in fried foods, chips and even coffee causes cancer. Acrylamide fears garnered national attention by receiving massive media coverage last year. While most of us saw it for what it really was, sensationalism in it's purest form , the stories still had tremendous potential to hurt potato farmers by linking French fires with cancer. In this latest study researchers from the Harvard School of Health monitored the dining habits of 43,000 woman and found absolutely no correlation to the amount of acrylamide's consumed and cancer. Surprised? I'm Susan Allen and this is Food Forethought.
