03/25/05 New favorite - Rulo Chardonnay Viognier

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran and today we are going to talk about my new favorite wine, which as many of you know is usually the wine that is in my glass at the time because as they say life is too short to drink bad wine. Recently I have tasted some great Viognier from all over the world. That led me to notice some interesting looking blends of Viognier and Chardonnay. One that has really struck me is from Walla Walla, Washington made by Rulo Winery. This is a small family owned winery making Chardonnay, Viognier and Syrah. In the case of this little 2003 gem, they created a wine that they call combine. And it is just that, a combination of 54% Viognier and 46% Chardonnay. The winemaking is very sensitive to the potential for the Chardonnay to overwhelm the Viognier and in fact, it seemed to be a chameleon. At times as I sipped it, I noticed a little something of the Viognier and then at others, I recognized a bit more of Chardonnay. How do they do that? The wine was complex in its own way. It was delicious, and great with food. All of the wines from this little winery are very good and quite reasonably priced. For our listeners on the east coast try calling Rulo Winery at 509.525.7865.
