Pink Lady for Valentines

Pink Lady for Valentines

Pink Lady for Valentines. I’m Greg Martin with today’s Fruit Grower Report.

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day and if you have been reading the news lately you will see that cacao prices are up and some special interest groups are calling sugar a “poisin.” So what can you give your sweetie? Alan Taylor with Pink Lady America has an answer.

TAYLOR: Doe several seasons we’ve been promoting the healthy aspects of apples in general and Pink Lady apples in particular as a healthy alternative to candy for Valentine’s Day. And as luck would have it this year we have a study from the University of Western Australia of all places that backs that up. It talks about apples being rich in antioxidants and Pink Lady has the highest level of those.

Each year they generate some interesting point of sale materials.

TAYLOR: We have generated a really good poster which this year has a man and a woman who obviously have great feelings for each other, they have the apple between them and they’re both taking a bite but you can also tell that they do have feelings for each other and of course the apple.

Taylor says there are very good supplies of Pink Lady apples.

TAYLOR: This is kind of the beginning or is the beginning of a key shipping period for us and in recent weeks we have been above the target that’s established for those particular shipments so anybody who is looking for Pink Lady apples to give as a Valentine’s Day gift certainly wouldn’t have any problem finding them at their favorite supermarket.

That’s today’s Fruit Grower Report. I’m Greg Martin on the Ag Information Network.
