Growing Rural Schools

I’m KayDee Gilkey with the Northwest Farm and Ranch Report after this.

All of us living in rural communities understand the money challenges our rural school districts face. Well the Monsanto Fund, which is the philanthropic arm of the Monsanto Company, has launched America's Farmers Grow Rural Education. This program gives farmers the opportunity to nominate their public school district to compete for $10,000 and $25,000 grants.

Now, not all Pacific Northwest counties are eligible --- farmers from two Eastern Oregon counties, five Southern Idaho and five Eastern Washington counties can nominate their rural schools districts. Farmers must be 21 years or older and be actively engaged in farming with a minimum of 250 acres of corn and/or 40 acres of open field vegetables.

Deborah Patterson, Monsanto Fund President encourages eligible farmers to nominate their rural public school district.

Patterson: “What they need to do is to go to GrowRuralEducation.com and nominate their district. It just takes a few minute or they can call 1-877-267-3332 and someone will talk to them and take their information. It only takes a minute. I want to tell farmers to go nominate their district. And to say to districts, if you are interested go find a farmer to nominate you.”

Patterson emphasizes that the more farmers who support the school district with nominations, the stronger that school district’s application becomes. The deadline for farmers to nominate is April 15th.
