Welcome to Open Range, I’m Susan Allen. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

I’m Greg Martin with today’s AgriBeef Minute. The Animal Agriculture Alliance’s “Real Farmers Real Food” project showcases the importance of American farmers and ranchers to our nation’s security and vitality. Sarah Hubbart is the Communications Director for the Alliance.

HUBBART: This was kind of a rallying point for people who were hearing about the Food Day effort on October 24 but didn’t want to go along with the negative connotation that it also brought along with it so this was a starting point to really highlight American agriculture.

They have a pledge on their website where you can sign to show support for agriculture. They have also teamed up with Miss America 2011, Teresa Scanlan.

HUBBART: Agriculture hasn’t had a whole lot of high profile celebrities speaking out for it which is unfortunate and so it’s great to have someone who both understand the issues, comes from a rural background and is also using her high profile to speak out for farmers and ranchers.

They are effectively using social media as well.

HUBBART: Social media is becoming more and more important in terms of agriculture advocacy and agriculture outreach to consumers because that really is where a lot of the conversations are happening. In this case realfarmersrealfood.com we’re very active in promoting the pledge through our social media channels. It’s a great way for farmers who are far removed from a lot of these urban areas to getting their voice out.

I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks Greg. Don’t forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. Agri Beef Co - Real Families, Great People, Exceptional Beef. I’m Susan Allen.
