Demise Of The Rural Post Office
An on-line commentary about the U.S. postal service provides food for thought. I’m Susan Allen stay tuned for Open Range. Boy I got a lot of heat and blog activity a while back when I shared that our understaffed US Postal Service yes the very ones who want to curtail Saturday delivery and keep raising the price of stamps spent $31.9 million to underwrite Lance Armstrong’s pro-cycling team. One listener wrote “$31.9 million is a lot to you & me, but in the scheme of things it was a TERRIFFIC BARGIAN considering the number of eyeballs the USPS got for their money, an out-of-the park GRANDSLAM.! So much for grand slams, all we have seen since is backwards K’s as more post office close in rural communities. Brian Depew from the Center of Rural Affairs is going to bat for those of us who make our homes in the country and said “we should work to maintain rural America’s ability to send and receive goods and connect with others by keeping postal service locations open and by increasing remote service options. A couple of his ideas include keeping a full-service window within another local business like a store or bank and equipping postal carriers to be able to process packages. So yes, the same government entity that pays millions of dollars to sponsor professional cycling could soon leave rural communities without services like for example, prescription drugs critical to the health of both humans and livestock.
