Good harvest progress for winter wheat

Farm and Ranch August 16, 2011 The USDA reported Monday that 94 percent of the U.S. winter wheat crop had been harvested at the start of this week. USDA meteorologist Eric Lubehusen says;

Luebehusen: “That is a nine point jump from last week when we were at 85%. But still five percentage points behind last year when the crop was virtually done being harvested.”

And it is pretty well done this year except in Montana and the Pacific Northwest. Farmers in the region did make some good progress this past week with the percent of winter wheat harvest completed going from 29 percent to 54 percent in Oregon, from 20 percent to 42 percent complete in Washington, and in Idaho from eight to 20 percent harvested. Despite last week’s progress winter wheat harvest in the PNW states is running from 23 to 37 points behind average for now.

USDA’s Luebehusen has an update on the U.S. spring wheat harvest.

Luebehusen: “Four percent of the crop nationally has been harvested. It is still early. One point ahead of last year. Two points behind the five year average.”

The spring wheat harvest is a lot further behind the five year average in the Pacific Northwest. For example, in Washington only three percent of spring wheat has been cut while the five year average for now is 45 percent.

Development of the U.S. corn crop is just a few points behind average for now and the latest condition rating is unchanged at 60 percent good to excellent. Last year at this time it was 69 percent.
