Alliance getting organized to address domestic fry demand

This update brought to you by Axial XL herbicide. This season don’t forget to rely on grower approved Axial XL for your grass weed control in wheat and barley.

Since we last talked with northwest wheat grower Kirk Moser warmer weather has allowed him to complete herbicide spraying of his winter wheat and he is now spraying his spring wheat. Kirk, like many growers this year the threat of stripe rust had you including a fungicide with your herbicide.

Moser: “All the grain has been getting fungicide application at herbicide timing and then we are starting to see some of the fields will be needing a second round at this point.”

Can you tell me what fungicide you used?

Moser: “We went with Tilt and Quilt. We split some of the fields just to get a look at what the different fungicides were doing, but those were our main to products.”

Farm and Ranch Report June 15, 2011 Do you recall the Alliance for Potato Research and Education? It is an industry group focused on turning around the domestic demand for French fries and is composed of the five major fry processors as well as the U.S. Potato Board and the National Potato Council.

Potato Board President and CEO Tim O’Connor says the work so far has been behind the scenes getting the alliance organized.

O’Connor: “We had to go through the development of an entire organizational structure, how the group makes decisions, put together committees, begin to conduct the background information on the problems we are facing and identify the right way to go about addressing those. We also been conducting a search to find a president and CEO to lead that initiative on a full-time basis.”

O’Connor says they are a long ways down the track on that work. He says watch for an announcement on a CEO for the alliance this summer along with some concrete plans.

O’Connor hopes the industry is excited about this initiative and how unique this opportunity is.

O’Connor: “That the five major processors in North American have come together and have put their money on the table. So we are going to solve this problem together. This problem is bigger than anyone of us. It is important to the entire industry and is clearly a watershed moment.”

And although it will take time and money the Potato Board CEO is optimistic about making progress on fry demand.

That’s the U.S. Potato Update. Brought to you by the United States Potato Board, maximizing return on grower investment. I’m Bob Hoff for Northwest Aginfo Net.
