Enjoy that cup of coffee, or tea, and that cereal or grapefruit…but you might want to think about going sugarless. I’m DS
Not to keep hammering away on the sugar beet crisis…but let’s look at this from a sugar beet producer’s perspective. March isn’t far away…that’s when sugar beets get planted but farmers aren’t ready to buy their seed because they don’t know whether they can buy genetically modified sugar beet seed yet. The Roundup Ready issue’s languishing in a Federal Court somewhere because of lawsuits against genetic modification. Here’s local sugar beet grower Sid Freeman talking about the only alternative to GMO seeds which is conventional sugar beet seed: “It’s gonna’ cost us a lot more to grow because of the weeds. It’s gonna take some hand labor and hand labor is terribly expensive these days.” Sid says that if he has to go conventional, he’ll be hiring people to get out in his fields with a weeding hoe in their hands.
