Being Safe on the Farm

Being Safe on the Farm. I'm Greg Martin with today's Line On Agriculture. Farm Safety Week is just around the corner, Sept. 19 through the 25 and to promote safety on the farm - the Propane Education and Research Council has developed safety and training materials that give farmers important information about propane-fueled equipment. PERC Projects Manager Brandon Robinson says these helpful materials are available to farmers as they explore the new Propaneville Farms - a virtual farm experience at agpropane.com. ROBINSON: It's a place where farmers can see many different ways you can use propane on the farm and actually get information about that equipment and the safety manual. So for instance on an irrigation engine you can find information on how to maintain and repair your stationary irrigation engine that run on propane or you can find refueling manuals so you can see how to properly refuel that piece of propane equipment on the farm. Robinson says the safe use of propane-fueled equipment is vitally important - and not just for the obvious reasons. He notes PERC wants to put information in the hands of farmers that will save them time and money. ROBINSON: When you do things safer and do the proper procedures you can do things more efficiently, more effectively and save on the bottom line which is always important to farmers. So we've put out materials to go through the proper procedures so that they can safely refuel that piece of equipment on the farm and they can maintain that irrigation on the farm so it can work for them longer, work for them more efficiently and work for the more effectively. PERC also wants to ensure the next generation knows about the safe use of propane on the farm. Robinson says safety is an important component of a curriculum PERC has developed for agriculture teachers. ROBINSON: One of the things that we've done in the last year is work with organizations to develop propane curriculum that can be used by classroom teachers to teach and reach standard curriculum goals but at the same time learn about some of the many pieces of propane equipment that students might have back home on their farm. At the same time we have worked with Farm Safety Days to provide activities and lessons to use at those farm safety days to again help kids get interested in propane and how to safely use it on the farm. Farm Safety Week is September 19th through the 25th. For access to PERC's safety and training materials - visit agpropane.com. That's today's Line On Agriculture.
