8-25 IAN Biomass Kickoff

8-25 IAN Biomass Kickoff

Corn farmers don’t throw away those corn cobs or stalks or what have you. Turn that bio-mass green…as in money. I’m David Sparks  POET energy will recognize farmers’ first foray into commercial biomass harvesting for their Project LIBERTY’s cellulosic ethanol at a kickoff event in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Right in the heart of corn country. Project LIBERTY is POET’s planned 25 million-gallon-per-year cellulosic ethanol plant in Emmetsburg, which will use corn cobs and light stover as feedstock. Here’s POET spokesman Matt Merritt: “We’re interested in corn cobs as the feedstock for celulosic ethanol. However we also realize that farmers need to have other options for harvesting this. In order to maximize farmers’ participation we’re also looking at taking bales which is what come out the back of the combine…leaves and husks, maybe a little bit of stalk.”

Farmers in the area this year will harvest about 56,000 tons of biomass for POET. Eventually, POET will need about 300,000 tons of biomass annually.
