Dairy legislation introduced; hay stocks

Washington Ag Today May 14, 2010 Washington Congressman Rick Larsen is one of the sponsors of legislation introduced this week to help the dairy industry. Under the Dairy Price Stabilization Act individual dairies would have the choice of either maintaining their current production level, plus an allowable year-over-year growth rate based on market indications, or expanding their production and increasing their share of the market. Dairies choosing to increase their market share would pay a fee during the first year of expansion, which is paid out to their fellow dairy farmers who are maintaining their current share of the market.

The Washington Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service reported earlier this week that hay stocks in Washington are down from a year ago. Here is the agency’s Linda Simpson.

Simpson: “The quantity of hay stored on Washington farms May 1, 2010 totaled 280-thousand tons, 20% less than last May 1st.”

Regionally, the combined Pacific Northwest hay stocks totaled 1.5 million tons, up 38 percent from last year.

Every year, Farm Safety 4 Just Kids recognizes the hard work of the organization’s chapter network by giving awards to the chapters that go above and beyond. Getting the 2009 New Chapter of the Year Award was the Central Columbian Basin chapter in Moses Lake. It held two events that reached 76 children.

The Farm Safety 4 Just Kids organization strives to educate youth about farm youth about farm safety in the hopes of preventing injuries and fatalities among children.
