Potato Conference keynoter hopeful about economy
Farm and Ranch January 29, 2010 Former White economic policy advisor Todd Buchholtz, who gave the keynote address at this week’s 1st Annual Washington Oregon Potato Conference, said this is probably the most challenging economy most of us have ever lived through. During a pre-speech interview the entrepreneur, author and educator said; Buchholtz: “Certainly those in the potato sector are still having an extraordinarily difficult time with low prices. But the overall pace of the U.S. economy is actually picking up. So there is reason to be hopeful about where the economy is headed and I think a year from now some of this pressure may actually be relieved.” Buckholtz doesn’t see the need for any more stimulus legislation from Congress. Buchholtz: “Well the best thing that could happen for the recovery would be for the Congress to home, stay home for a very long time.” As to non-economic issues like environmental concerns, Buchholtz said agriculture should admit when there is a problem and explain the steps being taken to address it. Buchholtz: “However, they are wrong in pointing the finger at this genetically modified crop or that genetically modified crop. So I think we need more credibility on both sides as opposed to feeling as if there Is a boxing match going on and there is no middle ground.” Finally, Buchholtz says nutrition plus convenience in products are key to today’s consumers and if you lack one of them, it is difficult to make great profits in the current environment.
