Wines for a New Baby

Wines for a New Baby

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. The past couple of days we’ve been talking about selecting wines to age. We are about to have a new baby in our family and I plan to invest in a case of wine to give to the parents; the father is a wine fan. The idea being; after the child is 21 they will share a bottle at dinners in the years that follow. So how do you select these wines?

Yes I am about to be a great Aunt and I must admit I am a little excited about it for a few different reasons. I love to read to children. I also adore my nephew and I know he will appreciate my putting together a case of wine. I decided on a mixed case rather than a case of one wine from the birth year. I want to include both red and white wines port and sherry. I will certainly put in German and Alsace Rieslings, as they will last much longer than 20 years, so they can be opened when he is in his late 20’s or even 30’s. Next I want a few classics such as a first growth Bordeaux, a reputable California and Washington Cabernet Sauvignon. I will look for a great vintage of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and some Burgundy and Oregon and California Pinot Noir. A bottle of something from Australia and Italy will round it out. If you are thinking about doing this sort of thing include a booklet with descriptions of the wines and what the predicted longevity is at this time as well as why you selected it. In other words, answer the question why is this a “dream case” of wine. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thank you for joining me on today’s Vine to Wine.
