Livestock and Crop Insurance

Livestock and Crop Insurance

Producers…are you insured for crop loss? Probably…but do you know what you get in the event of a disaster? It’s complicated and we’ll try to help in a minute. Ok, we’re back. I’d say let’s tackle livestock and crop insurance but I only have 72 seconds left. I called the Magic Valley’s Farm Service Agency’s County Executive Director Lance Phillips about their NAP program. NAP covers crops that are not covered by private crop insurance providers such as alfalfa, grains for forage, alfalfa seed, grass hay or fruit trees. Here are some of the things I heard: “These programs are fairly complex at the initial appearance. We are the safety net for farmers and ranchers. But these programs are complex, there’s no doubt about that. Each of these programs basically say you either have a private insurance program that matches the premiums and the risks that you’re willing to take, or you have FSA’s insurance which means if it’s not covered by another program, we insure for $250.”

As I said in the beginning, this is too much to cover in a few seconds but your FSA office is more than willing to help figure it all out with you.
