Winter Wines

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. Winter is the time when we tend to move away from drinking white wines and really focus on the reds. Today let’s talk about a few popular red wines that are likely good candidates for a chair by a fireplace along with a good book.

During the winter many of us seem to prefer a red wine to savor and sip in the evening. Syrah has been one of my all time favorites for a cozy evening. My new favorite is made by Olsen Estates out of Prosser Washington. It has such powerful fruit and is deep and rich with layers of flavor. The finish is stunning. And the bonus is it is not nearly as “spendy” as most wines of this caliber. Next, I am a Zinfandel fan and I enjoy them in the winter, but I am a little picky about it. I recently opened a 2001 Columbia Winery David Lake Signature series Zinfandel in honor of my old friend. Winemaker David Lake released a small bottling of 2001 Zinfandel, making Columbia Winery among the first to produce these varietals in Washington State. I went to their website and it doesn’t appear they make it anymore. Too bad. But try the Zinfandel being made by Forgeron Cellars out of Walla Walla, this winemaker is using grapes from the same source David did. Of course Cabernet Sauvignon is a must for a serious read and I recommend you treat yourself to Fidelitas or Garrison Creek both will leave you with a contented smile. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thank you for joining me on today’s Vine to Wine.
