Rain-Good or Bad

Rain-Good or Bad

A look at the way we look at weather…it’s like opinions, everyone’s got one, but they’re not necessarily alike, or to use a bigger word, homogeneous.  There’s no question whether weather… was that redundant? No, two different spellings, but I digress…weather is as important to a producer as any other element in his business. And in terms of weather, precipitation is key…it’s the king. That said, there is a very rosy picture portrayed for us up here in the great Northwest, by national meteorologist Brad Rippey. Listen. “We’ve seen some good rains in the northwest and that’s a bit of a bonus because we have settled into an El Nino pattern and eventually we expect the NW to turn dry so the fact that we’ve had a good wet November there’s a jump start for the winter grains across the NW.”  But then there’s Idaho wheat farmer Dar Olberding who feels there might have been too much of a good thing: “We had almost 2” of rain in a single day…that was the only problem we had.”

A “problem” Idaho Sugarbeet Growers Mark Duffin called by a different name : “Compared to the Mid-west and some of the Mountain West states that had a hard freeze and a lot of snow we felt pretty blessed.” But after saying rain was good, the meteorologist goes backward “Not too many complaints other than the wetness.” So Rain…Good..Bad…depends on what you’re growing, depends on where you live. I dunno.
