Washington State Potato Commission Chef Education Tours coming up
Farm and Ranch October 16, 2009 This is the second year for the Washington State Potato Commission to conduct its Chef Education Tours. They are coming up next week, October 19th in the Columbia Basin and then on October 21st and 22nd in the Skagit Valley. Commission assistant executive director Karen Bonaudi says the tours are part of their chef education program, some of which is classroom based and the students get credits for that, but they also get credits for the field tours. Bonaudi: “And we take a busload of culinary art students to potato fields and show them harvesting. We take them to a packing shed and show them fresh pack facilities and how the potatoes are graded and sorted and boxed. And we also take them to a storage shed to see the care and science that goes into storing potatoes for a few months for later use.” Bonaudi says many of the culinary students have never been on a farm before. Bonaudi: “The other thing that students really appreciate is seeing where their product comes from. They like to know how things are handled before it gets to them as chefs.” Bonaudi says the commission has to limit participation in the tours even though it gets calls from interested people from as far away as Kentucky.
