Potato Commission makes connections at produce show

Farm and Ranch October 9, 2009 Representatives of the Washington State Potato Commission returned earlier this week from Anaheim, California, where the annual Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit was held.

Matt Harris, Director of Trade for the Potato Commission, says about 19-thousand people visited the show, where suppliers came together with wholesalers, retailers and importers. He says Washington put together a pavilion featuring Washington potatoes, asparagus and onions.

The group also had executive chef Charlie Baggs from Chicago.

Harris: “So not only did he demonstrate uses for russet potatoes, he demonstrated uses for red potatoes, white potatoes, yellow potatoes, fingerling type. He also took on the ability to demonstrate different uses for onions, red, white and yellow onions, Walla Walla Onions and Washington asparagus.”

Harris says the show provided an opportunity to re-connect with some importers, like people the commission recently met at World Food Moscow in Russia.

Harris: “Three importers that we met in Moscow came to Anaheim and talked specifically about potato exports. So, it is a great tie-in to continue that program in another venue.”

There was also interest from past connections made in Costa Rica and Taiwan.
