Deadlines
Farm and Ranch September 29, 2009 Tomorrow, September 30th, is an important deadline for federal crop insurance and for farmers and ranchers who want get into the Conservation Stewardship Program for the first funding and ranking cutoff. USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service Chief Dave White says USDA can enroll up to 12.8 million acres in the Conservation Stewardship Program. As of last week there were applications to enroll only 7.3 million acres in the CSP. White: “I know that, I think it was the state of Oregon had already exceeded their acreage allotment. Frankly what I will do, if Iowa doesn‘t use all of theirs, will shift the acres to states that do have excesses.” Unlike the previous Conservation Security Program, eligibility is not limited by watershed in the new Conservation Stewardship Program, but is open to farmers and ranchers across the country. The CSP pays producers for their current conservation efforts and encourages them to do more. Tomorrow is also the sales closing date for federal crop insurance for numerous 2010 crops. That includes winter and spring wheat crop insurance, for which the base price for Crop Revenue Coverage and Income Protection is $5.55 a bushel. Also the closing date for barley with Winter Coverage Endorsement, mint with Winter Coverage Option, Dry pea with Winter Coverage Option, forage crop insurance and forage alfalfa seed pilot crop insurance.
