Carmenere Part 2

Carmenere Part 2

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. Today we are going to continue our conversation about the grape variety Carmenere.

As we discussed yesterday most of the currently popular Carmenere wines typically originate in Chile. Other countries known for wines made with this grape include Argentina, Spain and Portugal. Although some say it is similar to Merlot in mouth feel and flavor, Carmenere seems to have a more velvety texture, more earthy qualities and spiciness not found in most Merlots. Carmenere is dark in color and the fruit flavors are usually very ripe and lush. I think it is the soft tannins that make it reminiscent of Merlot. It pairs well with grilled red meat, hearty pasta and fish dishes and roasted pork dishes. Although it is gaining in popularity it has not yet risen to the recent ascent in popularity seen by Malbec. It appears as though Malbec from Argentina is the current craze.  This isn’t difficult to understand, as you can get a great wine at a great price. We call that a good value! But I predict the next craze will be Carmenere from Chile. There are already some whispers and you just might enjoy those easy drinking wines and there prices also.
