Wine Snob Strikes Again!

Wine Snob Strikes Again!

Just when I thought it was over, just when I thought it would never happen to me again - I was insulted by a wine snob! Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran and today we are going to address one of my pet peeves – wine elitists.

Okay so I select a wine from my meager collection to take to dinner at a friend’s house. I was to bring a wine to accompany the crab cakes. I chose a very elegant white wine with fabulous fruit and a great balance of acidity. I knew it would be wonderful with the crab. It was a Riesling from Alsace, France. As most of the guests complimented the combination one person, a woman I had never met, refused to even try it just because it was Riesling. I was stunned, to me Riesling is one of the most diverse and exciting wines in the world. Yes, in the world. It is a wine made in so many different wine regions in so many different styles that it is never boring and yet, it meets with much snobbism. I believe that snobbism comes from a lack of education and willingness to explore and understand such wines. When I asked why the guest wasn’t interested in trying the wine, the reply was, “Riesling is too sweet and I only drink dry wine”. I decided not to let her in on the fact that this was a bone dry wine that could rival any other white wine she would ever drank. I figured more for the rest of us. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thank you for joining me on today’s Vine to Wine.
