Find the Dime

Find the Dime

Scrambling for money? Find the Dime. I’m David Sparks. That story next. All the talk’s about economics these days. High input costs, low rates of return and profits. It turns out that a leading grain marketing specialist from the University of Minnesota, Ed Usset has strong advice…farmers: find the dime in your marketing plan.

(Usset) “Erase this notion of I’m going to figure out the market and sell something that resembles the high price. You’re not gonna do it. None of us are that good. We may stumble on it luckily but we’re not gonna do it consistently. What we can do consistently is shoot for and get a better margin, a better average price, I’m calling it Find the Dime, don’t stop at a dime, look for two or three.”

Usset says that finding that dime or two or three can increase farmers’ net income by 33 to 50 percent. He says the best lesson farmers should learn from last year is - “forget last year.”

(Usset) “The only thing that makes a $6 wheat look cheap is the $20 we saw last year. If we forget last year, there’s nothing cheap about $6 wheat.
