As you just heard the Department of Environmental Quality is overseeing agricultural field burning in Idaho this year. September 2nd will be the first possible date for burning but growers who have not had training from the Department of Agriculture within the past five years must take in person or on-line training from DEQ.
ANDERSON "Our training is just an updated version of what Department of Agriculture had with new information on the program, what's required of the grower and what's required of DEQ."
DEQ's Smoke Management Mary Anderson says some southern Idaho producers are unaware that the burning program is not supervised this year by the Department of Agriculture.
ANDERSON "There's still some questions on what the program is. If they have any questions give the regional offices a call or call the state office here."
That number in Boise is 373-0332. There's plenty of info at www.deq.idaho.gov . There are burn training sessions next Tuesday in Rexburg and Weiser, next Wednesday in American Falls, Thursday in Soda Springs and Friday at Preston.
