Leaping for a Pink Lady®. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.
Tomorrow is Leap Day and the folks with Pink Lady® America thought it might be fun to have an extra day to enjoy the Pink Lady® Apple.
TAYLOR: We're always looking for a way to get some attention and it came to mind a few weeks ago that we've got an extra day this year, it's a leap year and so we've got a leap day on the 29th and we thought we'd get the word out that what the heck, extra day, more time to eat Pink Lady® apples.
That's Alan Taylor with Pink Lady® America. He says the Governor's office was all too happy to sign a proclamation.
TAYLOR: Sure enough after contacting them they were agreeable to letting us declare this extra day in 2008, this leap day as Pink Lady® Brand Awareness Day. So we put together a proclamation and she signed it and I got it in the mail yesterday so I guess it's official that's our day.
Even though something like a governor's proclamation is done for then fun ultimately Taylor says it really is about getting the word out.
TAYLOR: Well when you are working with a new apple like Pink Lady® you are always finding folks that surprisingly enough even though we produce a couple of million boxes that they haven't tried it. We look for any avenue that we can find to get the word out that there is a relatively new apple there that we want people to try and we know that the grower, at least I think appreciates our efforts in that regard.
