Farm Finances

Farm Finances. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.

As the harvest season winds down there will be plenty of paperwork to catch up on. Accurate financial records are essential to a farm business. Kate Halstead with WSU Snohomish County Extension talks about an upcoming workshop that deals with bookkeeping on the farm.

HALSTEAD: It's something that is a necessary evil. You want to make sure that you're one; able to make sound business decisions made based on facts not gut and I think it's every bit as important for farm businesses to keep good records as it would be for any business.

She says too often we leave the paperwork until the end.

HALSTEAD: You leave the things that you either don't like or that you just plain and simply think you don't have the time for to last and so what we try to do is to help present some systems that will allow folks to go, oh maybe I don't need to spend that much time at it if I'm doing it on a regular basis.

She says the workshop will drill down to some fine details of finance.

HALSTEAD: We'll go into a fair amount of detail. We've done this before as a one-day workshop and we realized that we were really cramming an awful lot into a short amount of time and so we expanded it to two days. Saturday, October 24the. The second one is November 7th.
