Washington Ag July 25, 2007 The Washington Farm Bureau likes the House Ag Committee passed farm bill which it says is a balanced proposal that addresses the needs of a broader core of U.S. farmers, expanding benefits to literally all sectors of agriculture. Patrick Connor, state Farm Bureau National Affairs Director, says that's of importance to Washington agriculture.
Connor: "There is a new Title 10 that deals specifically with horticultural and other specialty crop products. There is mandatory spending in there through the state specialty crop block grant program in addition to expanded government purchases of fruits, vegetables and nuts and other things that our growers produce a lot of here in Washington state."
Connor says increased funding for some conservation programs and changes in the way the money will be distributed will also benefit Washington agriculture. And the legislation maintains the safety net for traditional farm program crops.
The Farm Bureau is urging Washington's congressional delegation to support the Ag Committee farm bill. Connor notes however that two members of the delegation, Reichert and Adams, are supporting a proposal by Congressman Ron Kind of Wisconsin, which the Farm Bureau opposes.
The House is expected to debate and vote on the farm bill yet this week.
