Peaches Without Borders: Georgia Grown Heads South
According to the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Georgia Grown peaches are officially back on the export scene in Mexico—for the first time in 27 years. Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper announced the milestone, made possible through a partnership with Genuine Georgia and Atlanta-based company Reveam.Back in 1994, Mexico halted imports of southeastern U.S. peaches over pest concerns. But now, thanks to Reveam’s USDA-approved Electronic Cold-Pasteurization technology, 42,000 pounds of fresh Georgia peaches have made the journey south of the border.
This cutting-edge process uses electron beam treatment—no heat, no chemicals—to eliminate pests while preserving the fruit’s flavor and freshness. It meets Mexico’s strict import standards and opens the door to a new customer base, including the 22 million residents in and around Mexico City.
Commissioner Harper called it a win for Georgia farmers and a model for using technology to open markets. USDA and Georgia ag officials now inspect each shipment and certify compliance with international standards.
It’s a big bite of opportunity for Georgia growers—and a reminder that great peaches know no borders.
