American Farmland Trust Launches “U.S. Farmed” Certification to Encourage Consumers to Buy Domestically Sourced Products

Experts say that within the next 15 years, more than 30 percent of America's agricultural land could be lost. That’s why American Farmland Trust introduced The U.S. Farmed™ certification. This certification includes a distinctive U.S. Farmed packaging seal for farm products that derive at least 95 percent of their agricultural ingredients from farms in the United States.

American Farmland Trust’s Acting President and CEO Beth Sauerhaft says…

“We are losing 2,000 acres of farmland a year to being paved over, built on, or converted to some other non-agricultural use. At the same time, we're facing an unprecedented transfer of land from one generation to the next. So, in the next 20 years, we're expecting to see about a third of our farmland – that's about 300 million acres of land – transfer from one generation to the next. So how can we make sure that this land is successfully transferred and that it stays in farming? We can buy raw materials from American farmers.”

American Farmland Trust is a national nonprofit dedicated to preserving farmland and supporting farmers.
