Ted's elk
Yesterday we listened as my buddy Ted Kuch was tracking an elk herd with a big bull in the rear. The story continues. “Is that normal behavior of the bull is kind of sniffing the ground just following their scent? Do you think? That's exactly what it looked like to me?That bull looked like my dog finding a shot bird. That bull had his nose to the ground trotting and he was maybe 90 seconds behind his cows. And so it appeared to me, about a dozen cows went up here to me he’s not far behind, just making sure, you know, that they're OK. So it's really cool. So I thought to myself, there's herd one bedded herd two is going right at the same direction. I don't know what my plan is, but I'm going over there. Oh, yeah. So I dropped down, cross the creek and I'm going up this game trail and I'm just stocking up real slow. And then I think I hear a noise. So I step up, you know, a yard or two off the game trail behind this giant Douglas fir tree trunk.
Four foot diameter. And I stand there and listen. And then I hear another noise. And so I knock an arrow. So I'm thinking it could be elk walking around here anywhere. So get ready.
Right. And so I'm standing there and I actually turned my feet so I could shoot. You know, I'm right handed. So my bow is my left her my feet so I could shoot to the right if I had to. Or back to the left. Thank goodness I did that. So I'm standing there. And then all of a sudden I hear this crazy noise.
And I'm thinking, that sounds like somebody sawing a log, like making camp up there. But there's a freakin elk herd there, forty five minutes ago. How could that be?
