Prop 12 Implementation Modification Order

Prop 12 Implementation Modification Order

The state of California released a court order that modifies Prop 12 implementation. Bryan Humphreys, CEO of the National Pork Producers Council, talks about the significance of the order and what it means to those who aren’t lawyers.

“As a non-lawyer myself, essentially what we have here is an extension of time for the sale of noncompliant, whole pork meat, provided that that meat was in the supply chain by July 1. If it's in the supply chain by July 1, that product can be sold in California until December 31. But anything harvested after July 1 to be sold in California will still have to be proposition 12 compliant. This change is not a delay of all of Proposition 12. It is only an adjustment related to the sale of whole pork meat.”

NPPC recognizes this is a complex issue, and Humphreys talks about available resources to help producers understand compliance guidelines for Prop 12.

“We've been working with the California Department of Food and Agriculture or CDFA to provide clarity and guidance to the entire supply chain. They have and are hosting a series of webinars for producers and other industry stakeholders that help everyone understand these complex regulations."
