06/29/06 Parma field day

July 7th is the date for the University of Idaho's field day at Parma. It all begins at 9 AM with ongoing studies in potatoes, onions, beans, alfalfa seed, wheat and barley. U of I's Brad Brown says visitors can see for themselves the results of trials of promising new small grains. BROWN "If they've historically have been in involved in one market class and they want to look at something that's in a different market class and have an opportunity to grown that and to market in that class well then we'll have stuff to look at." They will learn about fertilizer management in small grains, including fall-planted waxy spring barleys and low-phytate spring barleys. Participants interested in potatoes will see trials of new varieties for the Treasure Valley and studies focusing on phosphorus, groundcover effects and pesticide placement. The U of I will add a free lunch to the July 7th Parma program. On July 18th eastern Idaho producers of potatoes and small grains will have a chance to see the U of I's field day demonstrations near Blackfoot. If its about potatoes it will be talked about and there will be plenty of machinery displays and demonstrations. Voice of Idaho Agriculture Bill Scott
