Farmers weren't the only ones who met in Orlando, Florida last week. Leaders of the U.S. hog and pork industries did as well.

In addition to the commodity classic, Orlando also hosted the National Pork Industry Forum, a joint meeting between the National Pork Producers Council and the National Pork Board.

Minnesota Hog producer Terry Walters is the immediate past president of the National Pork Producers Council and provides an update on Proposition 12, which farmers and ranchers across America are paying very close attention to and for good reason.

"Proposition 12, it's been a long journey," said Wolters. "It's been since 2018 that we've been on this track. Ultimately here, this past October, we were able to get in and present our case to the Supreme Court. We're expecting we could have a announcement and any at any time. We're really on the clock as we speak. But ultimately, that's in the hands of the Supreme Court. And it's not to your point, it's not only about pork. Pork is the issue of the current case, but really it's about the dormant commerce clause and ultimately how states interact or do business with each other. In our view, we just feel like the ability for the state of California to regulate industry outside its borders is beyond its jurisdiction. And so ultimately, we're feeling really good about our position and our case, and we look forward to their announcement."

He said other key priority issues for 2023 include keeping the U.S. hog herd safe from African Swine Fever (ASF) and protecting private property rights from harmful regulations like the Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS).
