Happy National FFA Week! As members, advisors, and alumni celebrate, I wanted to highlight a story that always makes me smile.

Last year I walked by the replacement heifer sale at the California Mid-State Fair. A mixture nostalgia and jealousy crept up as I heard the auctioneer yell “8 thousand!” then “9 thousand!” By the time I pushed through the crowd of dads in cowboy hats and moms holding rope halters, that number had jumped to “do we have 13?” and then “17 thousand dollars!”

17 thousand dollars? My cheeks were burning from smiling. And in the middle of the crowd cheering, ring men hollering, and cattle bellowing, was Ethan Lazanoff and his heifer. I knew right then, I have to talk to this kid. So I did.

“Ethan, you just got done selling your heifer. Can you tell me a little bit about that experience this year?”

“It was really exciting. It's my first year having a Supreme Champion heifer. She was the baby of my heifer from two years ago, and I've raised her since she was born. Her mom did really good at the fair two years ago… I'm really excited. I've never experienced that much excitement and everyone cheering and everyone clapping and everything. It was really exciting.”

Join us next time to hear from Ethan and what he’s doing now.
