Ice shelf fishing

A close call for Brian Oakland as he was traveling and came upon a river that he knew had some good fishing. I was headed from Idaho over to Montana and I was fishing along the Loch Saw and I had been up here about a month ago, so it would probably be early October. And the rivers were really fishing well, native cutthroat, it was phenomenal. I stop along the way and just fishing. Well, the weather is definitely changed. We have a lot more snow. There was some really solid shore in this one little section. Definitely shouldn't have been there. But as I was fishing, I kind of tested the ice that I was fishing on. And as I was fishing this one little spot, I wasn't really paying attention. In all honesty, I kind of got caught up in the fishing. I started working my way up river and I wasn't testing the ice. I went to make a cast into this pool and I took a step forward with my right foot and the ice broke. I literally went down into the river and the river was moving. And at first I almost dropped my rod and reel didn't have my waders on, but I had a pair of wading pants on, so I wasn't getting soaking wet yet. But I definitely had water rushing up the side of my legs. And as I reached to the ice on the right of me, it broke. It wasn't a panic situation, but I wasn't going to exit the same way that I entered into the river. So I actually had to walk down river with the current probably about 20 yards till I could get to a spot that didn't have the shore ice, climb back out of the river, because that was a pretty intense little moment there. Speaker1: Yeah, I would say, Hey, Brian, next time, look before you leap.
